Printify Vs Printful: Which Is Better for Side Hustlers in 2026

Introduction

Last updated: September 23, 2026

In January 2021, Terra and Josh Dime opened a print-on-demand Etsy store called Puddin Threads.

One sale came in the first month. Their first $1,000 month arrived six months after launch.

Once they found their retro niche, they sold around $60,000 of clothing in six months — $35,000 of it profit, according to Printify’s own seller story.

That’s one documented result, published by the platform they used — not a typical outcome. The platform printed the shirts; months of reworked designs are what sold them.

My research into both Printify and Printful has been extensive. The surprise: their own comparison pages price the same basic tee about 10 cents apart.

Note: Printful and Printify announced their merger on 5 November 2024. Both brands still run separate sites, catalogs and pricing.

What Each Platform Actually Is

What Each Platform Actually Is

Printify routes your orders to a network of print providers; Printful prints them in its own facilities.

Which print-on-demand platform fits you?

Answer one question and get routed to the platform that fits how you sell, not just a sticker price.

What matters most for your store?

Both Printify and Printful are print-on-demand platforms. You design products, they print and ship directly to your customers. You never touch inventory.

That’s where the similarity ends. Printify is a print network.

It connects you to 90+ print providers running 140+ facilities, per its own pricing page. You choose the provider, the product and the margin.

Printful owns its production. Every order runs through its in-house facilities — more quality control, less choice.

For beginners, both remove the biggest barrier to a print-on-demand side hustle: upfront stock. If you’d rather ship nothing physical at all, selling digital downloads skips the print provider entirely.

Between these two, the real split is control versus choice — not price.

Printify vs Printful: Pricing and Profit Margins

Printify vs Printful: Pricing and Profit Margins

On Printify’s own January 2026 figures, 100 tees a month at $25 earns about $80 more on Printify than on Printful.

Pricing is where most comparisons crown a winner — and where the gap turns out smallest. Both companies publish a side-by-side comparison. Each one is written to win you over.

On the same Bella+Canvas 3001 tee, Printify lists $11.40 against Printful’s $11.50 in its own comparison.

Printful’s version agrees from the other side: its cheapest US black tee is $9.25 to Printify’s $9.16.

When two rivals’ own sales pages land within 10 cents, price stops being the deciding factor. So choose on what really differs for a side hustle idea you’re testing: fees, catalog and consistency.

Base product costs compared

Strip away the branding and compare what you actually pay per item: Printify still wins on cost, by cents.

Add US shipping and Printify’s January 2026 table shows $15.39 against $16.19 on Printful. That’s $0.80 a shirt, and $0.70 of it is shipping rather than the blank.

Cheapest tee to cheapest tee, Printify’s own table shows $7.66 versus Printful’s $8.17.

Sweatshirts tell the same story: Shopify’s comparison prices a Gildan crewneck from $13 on Printify Premium and $14 on Printful Growth.

Here’s what a $25 tee leaves you on Printify’s figures:

  • Printify: $9.61 profit per shirt after base cost and shipping
  • Printful: $8.81 profit per shirt on the same terms
  • Neither figure includes a monthly plan fee

That’s real money at volume — just not the chasm most comparisons describe.

Free plan vs paid: what you actually get

Both platforms are free to start. The limits differ.

Printify’s Free plan covers 5 stores and unlimited product designs. Printful Free allows unlimited stores.

Paid plans flip the usual story. Printful Growth costs $24.99 a month, with up to 33% off and a 14-day free trial.

Printify Premium costs $39 a month, or $24.99 billed yearly, after a February 2026 price rise. It takes up to 20% off most products and supports 10 stores.

Do the maths before upgrading.

Take the $8.77 tee Printify’s pricing page uses as its example: at the full 20% off, Premium saves about $1.75 a shirt.

That’s roughly 23 tees a month before the $39 fee pays for itself. On yearly billing, it’s about 15.

What the gap is worth at real volume

Small gaps still add up — just more slowly than most comparisons suggest.

Printify’s profit calculator: 100 tees a month at $25 earns $961 on Printify, $881 on Printful. That’s about $80 a month on one product, before any plan fee.

Here’s how it scales on the same figures:

  • 30 tees/month: $288 vs $264, a $24 gap
  • 100 tees/month: $961 vs $881, an $80 gap
  • 200 tees/month: about $160 apart, if the $0.80 per-shirt gap holds

Quality is the other side of the trade. Shopify’s own write-up calls Printify’s quality “more variable” and credits Printful with better quality control.

Eighty dollars a month is worth having. It shouldn’t pick your platform on its own.

Print Quality and Product Range

Both offer solid quality, but Printify’s network provides a far wider product selection.

Both platforms print well. The real difference isn’t quality — it’s who controls the printing.

Printful owns its facilities and runs identical 3-step quality testing in each one. Printify routes orders to third-party print providers, so quality can vary with the one you pick.

Printify’s safety net is Merchant Protection: a free reprint or refund within 30 days for manufacturing errors.

Where Printify wins is range: 1,300+ products on Printify’s pricing page, against Printful’s 562.

Where Printful leads is branded packaging: white-label packaging, custom packing slips and paid pack-ins. Printful’s comparison says Printify offers pack-ins only through specific print providers.

If unboxing is part of the product, that alone can decide it.

Either way, vet your Printify supplier before you go live.

Printify vs Printful: Shipping Times and Reliability

Printify vs Printful: Shipping Times and Reliability

Printify fulfils most partner orders in the customer’s region; Printful counters with predictable 2–5 day turnaround.

Shipping is where Printify’s multi-supplier model cuts both ways.

Printify says 92% of partner-facility orders are fulfilled in the customer’s own region. Its FAQ also admits shipping times vary by supplier.

Printify’s multi-supplier model is a double-edged sword — global reach, but no guarantee every supplier delivers the same way.

In the Printify vs Printful shipping debate, Printful wins on consistency. Its fulfillment averages 2–5 business days, and over 97% of orders ship within 5.

Printify’s help centre says most orders ship within 2–7 business days. Neither figure includes transit.

Printify’s gap closes with smart supplier selection:

  • Check each provider’s 30-day average fulfillment time before choosing
  • Stick to one supplier per product to avoid inconsistent experiences
  • Check supplier reviews inside the Printify dashboard before going live

Pick your suppliers carefully and the gap narrows fast.

Which Platform Integrates Better With Your Store

Which Platform Integrates Better With Your Store

On Shopify both platforms route orders automatically; beyond it, Printful connects to more storefronts.

Printify and Printful both connect directly with Shopify. Once a product is published, orders route automatically to production on either one.

On a Tuesday night after work, that’s the part that matters — and it’s a tie. Breadth is where they split.

Shopify’s comparison counts 19 marketplaces and store builders for Printful and 10 for Printify. It also notes Printify’s TikTok Shop feature is US-only.

If you want a print on demand setup that runs without you, Shopify is the natural storefront. Its Basic plan costs $39 a month, or $29 billed yearly — a fixed cost before any sale.

Set it up once, and it keeps working while you sleep.

Printify vs Printful: Ease of Use for First-Time Sellers

Printify vs Printful: Ease of Use for First-Time Sellers

For first-time sellers, less friction in the design process means faster launches.

Getting a store off the ground shouldn’t feel like learning new software on top of everything else you’re already managing.

Both platforms are beginner-friendly. The difference is how many decisions they hand you. That matters when you’re running a print on demand home office business between meetings and bedtime.

  • Printify’s free Product Creator handles upload, position, preview and publish, with AI tools and free graphics
  • Printify also asks you to pick a print provider for each product, weighing price, location and ratings
  • Printful skips that choice: every order goes to its own facilities, and its Design Maker is built in

For a first store, fewer decisions can matter more than extra choice. Printify rewards sellers willing to compare providers. Printful suits anyone who’d rather not.

Whichever you pick, order a sample first.

Raven Gibson, founder of Legendary Rootz, told Shopify’s blog she orders samples “just to make sure that it looks how I envisioned it.”

The Verdict: Which One Is Right for Side Hustlers

The Verdict: Which One Is Right for Side Hustlers

The real trade-off is range versus consistency; on a basic tee, the price gap is cents, not dollars.

Both platforms work, and on a basic tee price barely separates them.

If you’re building a print-on-demand side hustle around a full-time job and want room to test, Printify is the easier call.

Its free plan pairs 1,300+ products with $0 monthly overhead while you find what sells.

Choose Printful if consistency and branding are part of the product. You’re paying for in-house production, and its $24.99 Growth plan undercuts Printify Premium’s $39 monthly price.

But for most people comparing Printify vs Printful while trying to build print-on-demand passive income without quitting their job, Printify’s bigger catalog tips it.

It’s the best print-on-demand platform for starting lean — once there’s someone to sell to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Printify and Printful Merge?

Yes — the two companies announced their merger on 5 November 2024, and the merged leadership team started work on 20 November.

Both brands still run as separate platforms — separate catalogs, separate pricing, separate accounts. Printify’s own blog describes a merger that unifies leadership “while maintaining both brands.”

This comparison reflects their current distinct offerings, checked on 23 September 2026.

Can You Use Printify and Printful Together on the Same Store?

Yes, you can use both on the same store. Shopify lets you connect multiple print-on-demand apps simultaneously. A hoodie through Printify, a poster through Printful — it’s entirely possible.

In practice, pick one and stick with it.

Splitting your catalog across two suppliers adds confusion, inconsistent shipping times, and extra admin. That’s exactly what you don’t need when running a side hustle around a day job.

Do Either Platforms Handle Customer Service and Returns for You?

Neither platform handles customer service for you. That’s your job as the store owner.

What they do handle is production and fulfillment. If a shirt arrives damaged or misprinted, you submit a claim and they fix it.

But if a customer simply dislikes the color, that complaint lands in your inbox, not theirs.

Are There Product Minimums or Order Requirements to Get Started?

Neither Printify nor Printful requires product minimums or order commitments to get started. You can sell a single item and they’ll print and ship it on demand.

There’s no bulk ordering, no upfront stock, no warehouse needed. You only pay when a customer buys something — making your upfront cost $0.

It’s a busy model: Printful’s 2026 statistics count over 368,000 Shopify stores running a print-on-demand app.

Zero stock isn’t zero risk, though — what dropshippers actually make is a sobering read on the same no-inventory idea.

Can You Sell on Etsy Using Printify or Printful?

Yes, both Printify and Printful connect directly to Etsy. Once you link your account, orders placed on Etsy automatically route to your print provider for fulfillment. You don’t touch anything manually.

Printify’s Etsy integration works well for testing designs with low upfront risk. There’s no monthly fee on the free plan.

That’s exactly where Puddin Threads started: Etsy first, a standalone site later.

Do Printify or Printful Own the Designs You Upload to Their Platforms?

Neither platform owns your designs. When you upload artwork to Printify or Printful, you keep full intellectual property rights.

They are simply fulfilling your orders. They aren’t acquiring your creative assets.

Printify’s help centre even confirms that images made with its AI Image Generator belong to you.

You are, however, responsible for ensuring your designs don’t infringe on someone else’s copyright. Upload only original work, and your creative assets stay yours.

Conclusion

For a side hustle on a shoestring budget, Printify is the better starting point — for its range and free plan, not a price gap.

Full disclosure: I haven’t opened a print-on-demand store yet — deliberately.

My own store is planned, but only once there’s a large following here that trusts me and actually wants my merch.

Getting Home Hustle Hub to critical mass comes first, because merch without a trusting audience is the wrong order.

Even Puddin Threads needed six months of reworked designs before its first $1,000 month.

Next step: order one sample of your best design through Printify and judge it in hand.
