Most people spend hundreds on an ergonomic chair and ignore the $20 piece of hardware that actually matters.

That’s the wrong way around.

Repetitive strain injury from typing rarely comes from the chair you sit in. It comes from the angle your wrists hold all day.

That angle is set by the keyboard, the desk height, and what your hands rest on between keystrokes.

Why RSI Costs More Than the Gear to Prevent It

Wrist injuries build slowly and settle slowly. The prevention arithmetic is not close.

If you type for a living, your hands are how your income happens. That makes wrist health a business risk, not a comfort preference.

Carpal tunnel syndrome tends to build slowly, get ignored, then take months to settle.

The NIH clinical reference is blunt about the far end: untreated, it can cause permanent loss of sensation and function in the hand.

Most cases never get near that.

The same reference puts 70% to 90% of mild-to-moderate cases responding to conservative treatment.

Both facts point the same way.

The gear that changes wrist angle costs tens of dollars, and the outcome it guards against has no price.

That arithmetic is the whole article in one sentence.

How RSI Actually Develops at a Keyboard

Bending the wrist up or down raises the pressure inside the carpal tunnel by roughly an order of magnitude.

The mechanism is straightforward.

Your wrist has a narrow channel — the carpal tunnel — carrying the median nerve alongside nine flexor tendons.

Pressure inside it normally sits between 2 and 10 mmHg, per the NIH clinical reference.

Bend the wrist up or down and that pressure climbs to 8–10× normal, according to the same NIH reference.

That figure is what the whole topic turns on.

Now put a repetition count beside it.

OSHA’s keyboard guidance notes a proficient typist can perform more than 18,000 keystrokes an hour.

Ten times the pressure, eighteen thousand times an hour.

Laptop keyboards are the usual culprit, and OSHA names their small size and built-in tilt as a source of awkward wrist posture.

Early symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and half the ring finger.

They tend to show up at night first and ease during the day. Later they turn constant, with weakness and clumsiness.

The night-time pattern is the early warning most people miss.

How to Get Your Wrists Into Neutral Position

Drop your wrists

Fingers should descend onto the keys. If you are reaching up, the keyboard sits too high.

STEP 2

Forearms parallel

Forearms roughly parallel to the floor, elbows close to the body and bent 90–120°.

STEP 3

Rest, don’t lean

Hands stay above the rest while typing. In pauses the pad meets the palm, never the wrist.

STEP 4

Tilt for straight wrists

Raise the front or back of the keyboard until wrists sit straight. Drop the feet if they bend the wrist.

The fix is hardware, not willpower. Nobody holds a good wrist angle by concentrating on it for eight hours.

OSHA’s neutral posture guidance puts hands, wrists and forearms straight, in-line and roughly parallel to the floor.

Elbows stay close to the body, bent between 90 and 120 degrees.

Shoulders relaxed. Feet flat on the floor, or on a footrest when the desk height will not move.

The four steps above all serve that one position.

A wooden palm rest holds a fixed height and will not sag, which is why typists reach for one.

Do Wrist Rests Actually Help — and How Should You Use One?

OSHA’s wrist rest spec is about depth, edge shape and when you touch it. Material sits further down the list.

The internet argues gel versus wood. OSHA’s wrist rest spec argues something else entirely.

Start with timing.

Your hands should stay above the rest while typing.

When you pause, the pad meets the heel or palm of your hand — not the wrist.

OSHA warns that resting the wrist while typing can inhibit motion and increase awkward postures.

The American Optometric Association lands in the same place: wrists should not rest on the keyboard while typing.

Two independent bodies, one message. A wrist rest is a pause surface, not a typing surface.

Now the material question.

OSHA runs opposite to the enthusiast consensus here: supports should be fairly soft and rounded, and at least 1.5 inches deep.

Hard rests are not ruled out, but OSHA flags sharp, hard leading edges as a contact-stress source.

So the thing to inspect on a wooden rest is the front edge, not the timber.

Match its height and slope to the front edge of your keyboard and the material barely matters.

The mechanical-versus-membrane debate gets framed as taste. For RSI it is a force question.

Cherry publishes real numbers for its MX2A Brown switch.

Actuation force is 45 cN. Final force at the bottom of the key travel is 80 cN.

The tactile bump arrives at actuation, not at the bottom.

So a trained typist can stop at 45 cN instead of driving every stroke through to 80.

Set that gap against OSHA’s 18,000 keystrokes an hour and it stops being a matter of taste.

Membrane and laptop boards publish no comparable figure, and they give you no bump to stop at.

Here is the honest caveat.

No trial shows a mechanical keyboard prevents RSI, and OSHA states plainly that the evidence on alternative keyboards is not conclusive.

This is a mechanism argument, not a proven outcome.

What Cornell’s Research Found About Chairs and Wrists

An expensive ergonomic chair will not fix bad wrist positioning.

That is the finding of a Cornell study run by graduate student Marisol Barrero under ergonomist Alan Hedge.

They put 24 typists in four high-end chairs listing between $900 and $1,200, each adjusted to the person.

Wrist angles were measured with electrogoniometers while people typed.

Hedge’s summary: “no chair significantly reduced the risk of wrist injury from typing.”

In every chair, typists extended their wrists to about twice the recommended safe angle.

The study dates from 1999 and chair design has moved on since. The wrist mechanism has not.

Set it beside the pressure figure and the picture closes.

The chair sets your torso. The keyboard and rest set your wrists. Buying one does not buy the other.

Fix the hands first, then look at the chair.

How to Use the 20-20-20 Rule Without Killing Your Flow

A 20-second look into the distance resets eye focus. It does nothing at all for a tendon.

The rule is simple: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

The American Optometric Association recommends it for screen work.

It is an eye rule, and 20-20-20 does nothing for tendons.

Twenty seconds of looking up does not unload a wrist that has been bent for an hour.

OSHA runs a different clock for that: a five-minute break every hour, away from the keyboard.

Two rules, two tissues, two timescales.

Almost nobody frames them that way, so people run one and assume they are covered.

Run the eye rule passively — take the full 20 seconds whenever you glance up anyway.

Run the hourly one deliberately, because that is the one your hands need.

The chair adjusts to the desk, not the other way around.

If the desk pushes your elbows past 120 degrees, you are loading the wrong tissue all day.

Two ways out of that.

Yes, because RSI is driven by posture under load, not by duration alone.

Wrist extension multiplies carpal tunnel pressure roughly tenfold, and that multiplier applies to every hour you type.

Do Standing Desks Prevent Wrist Strain?

Not on their own.

Standing changes how your back and hips carry the load, but wrist angle is set by keyboard position.

If the keyboard sits too high or tilts the wrong way, standing up changes nothing for your wrists.

Strengthening tissue that is still damaged every workday achieves very little.

The NIH reference lists nerve-gliding exercises and hand therapy as useful additions, not substitutes for the workstation fix.

RSI builds slowly enough to ignore, right up to the point where it cannot be ignored.

The changes that alter wrist angle are cheap.
